Welcome back to all of our Scouts old and new, HELLO! We hope that you all had a great break and took the opportunity for some rest and relaxation during this magnificent summer. Now that everyone is back from vacation, we are looking forward to seeing the Scouts on Monday 10th Sep (7pm as usual at the Scout Hall in Mortlake) and to welcome new Scouts coming up from Cubs, joining us from other troops and hopefully some new volunteer Leaders. We have lots to do planned for this term, and will start with a review of Summer Camp and all the great activities that we managed to pack into a very hot week back in July!
Subs are now due for the Autumn term. The cost is £60 per term which we believe represents very good value for all the activities and enjoyment on offer at Scouts. Please do arrange to pay via direct debit through the electronic payment system (Go Cardless).
Investing New Scouts
The goal is to invest new Scouts on 1st October, as soon as they know the Scout Laws and Promise. For any parents or relatives that wish to come along and take a few photos, please arrive at the Scout Hut a little earlier than usual at 8:15pm.
To provide some advance warning, there will be no scout meeting on Monday 22rd Oct for the half term break. The last regular meeting of the year will be Monday 10th Dec although we will look to partner up with the Cubs to hold a Christmas Party – details to be announced.
Contact Details and Code of Conduct
A quick reminder that if there are any changes to your contact details, please let us know so that we stay up to date, as this will enable us to get in touch with you in case of an emergency and ensure the safe running of Scouts. We will also issue a Code of Conduct, Photo Permission and External Location Permission forms. Please sign and date these and return the following week.
Barnes Fundraising Sale (5 & 6 October)
The Scout Group has a regular fundraising event each year in support of the Barnes Community Association Grand Jumble Sale. We will be providing support and running a stall, and so we really need the help of Scouts and Parents on Fri 5th and Sat 6th October to sort the jumble and staff our allotted stall. If you can support us, please see one of the leaders after the Scout meeting.
Scavenger Hunt (8 October) / Wide Games (12 November)
We will be running some of our Troop nights at Sheen Common, provisionally to be held on 8th Oct and 12th Nov. For these evenings we will meet at Fife Road just opposite The Mall and collection will be from the same location. Scouts are advised to wrap up warm (with hat/gloves as necessary), wear a waterproof jacket (if raining), stout waterproof boots (as it can be wet and muddy) and bring a working torch. We will provide squash and a small snack on the night!
County Night Event (20 & 21 October)
The GLSW County are running their annual Night Event from Sat 20 to Sun 21 Oct. We expect to start around 4pm at the hut, where Scouts will be given dinner and then taken to the Night exercise at Shere near Guildford. Here they’ll work in teams to complete a course and various challenges. On completion, we’ll return to the hut for a sleepover, with collection on Sunday morning following breakfast at the hut. We request all interested Scouts to provide their name to one of the leaders in the next 2 weeks. Permission forms will be sent out to those selected to go nearer the time.
Centenary Remembrance Sunday (11 November)
This years Remembrance Service and Parade is particular poignant as it marks 100 years since the first Armistice, and this years parade is to be held on Sunday 11th Nov. Our Group will respectively play its usual role in this annual event held at Milestone Green at the junction of Upper Richmond Road & Sheen Lane, where we will join in with other uniformed organizations in commemoration. We will meet at Sheen Lane Medical Centre car park at 10:30am in full Scout uniform – Poppies will be available for those without! As a Group we expect all members Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers to attend. Please ensure confirmation of attendance via the OSM link.
Hike Weekend (dates to be confirmed)
Our annual Hiking Weekend is currently being planned to take place provisionally at Broadstone Warren (which is set within the Ashdown Forest on the High Weald close to East Grinstead). This is a fun residential weekend away staying in a fully equipped hut with an inglenook and large log burning stove for added atmosphere! We can take up to 12 Scouts – please advise a leader if you are interested.
2nd Mortlake Centenary Camp 2019
You will have already seen invites to our Centenary Camp at Walton Firs on the late Spring Bank Holiday (May 2019). We would like as many Group members and their families and friends to help 2nd Mortlake Scout Group celebrate! With the long history of the Group recorded all round the Scout Hut in Mortlake, please help us make this event a momentous one that will be remembered for years to come! Attendance can be confirmed via the OSM link.
Summer Camp 2019
It may be rather early to consider next summer, but not for 2nd Mortlake! We have already set aside provisional dates for next July. We will send out initial details soon requesting a small deposit (£25) to secure a place.
Yours in Scouting
Rob, David, Dominique, Jenny, Richard and Ant
